Ease Allergies with This Vitamin?

health_20070921_folate_bannerCould better allergy control come from a vitamin bottle?  Maybe. A new study suggests vitamin B9, also known as folate, may help improve your immune system’s ability to stand up to common allergens.  The Folate Factor
A national health survey of over 8,000 people revealed that higher blood levels of folate were often coupled with less severe reactions to common allergens. Specifically, the folate-lovers’ blood contained fewer of the immune-system antibodies that are released during allergic reactions — and the group was also less likely to report asthma or wheezing.

Exciting, But Early . . .
The research sounds pretty promising, especially considering that other studies have revealed an association between higher levels of folate and less risk of inflammation-related diseases, like heart disease and rheumatoid arthritis. But more studies are needed to confirm the allergy research. Regardless, getting adequate amounts of folate is a worthy health goal. Just don’t go overboard.
