I met the person who runs Sunsations, Tom, at his girlfriend’s house party Monday night and had a discussion about the come back of the “spray tan”.. and whether or not it might make sense for me to book appointments once again through a whole different salon.. I used to co-own Smart Sun in Greenwich a few years back where I mastered the art of the spray tan and obtained a lot of happy clients quickly.  It was an interesting and fun business that required huge people skills.  I say that because women are standing for a long time in front of you either in their underwear and bra, bikini, one piece, topless or completely nude for as long as it takes for you to spray them down! This can render one vulnerable and uncomfortable.  I digress… so at times, I think, should I ever do that again, sometime? A. I was very good at it and B. I made people laugh and feel completely comfortable!

Yesterday, I go to sunsations to check out the booth, spray tan. I have never done that before and I will say I loved the glow of the bronzer in the spray directly after booth experience, and it harkened me back to a time where I was golden tan for the entire summer; the summer I was spraying others! BUT, I didn’t care for all the over-spray and the inhalation of it during my booth tan AT ALL. I also found it difficult to hold my breath while the spray shot out of the machine going up and down the wall. I felt a little panicky as I had to inhale the overspray and felt the wind so strong from the spray. I did not find it to be relaxing.  It is also quite difficult to control overspray on different areas of the body. My right hand got particularly whacked with overspray and in between my fingers is stark white.  Overall, I don’t mind the color everywhere else, and I have to admit, I love feeling tanned, but I am not sure I want my face SO tanned.  I like how white my teeth look, but do feel a bit orangey face-wise.

The secret in a great spray tan is in an even application and a superior product.  I have the fever now,  and like to feel like I have color because I am totally porcelain-ed skinned, but am a bit apprehensive about inhaling the over-spray in the booth again. I coughed for a few hours after I left.  I don’t care if it is organic, or not, it can’t be great for you.  I wore a mask when I tanned others, and offered them the same because many women didn’t want to tan their face, they would apply bronzer themselves to match their bodies.  I am a proponent of spray tans because I have had some cancerous cells removed from my face, stomach and back, and it hurt, and required many stitches.  I might want to look into a personal sprayer, to avoid inhalation of over-spray and to get a more even and natural looking application.

That being said, will I do it again? I might, If I can’t find a reasonably priced person to spray me, or find a product I can apply myself for great results.  There are a few out there, which I have blogged about here, but you cannot beat a spray tan by a skilled spray tanner! I know that for a fact!

Sunsations is a great place which offers some quality products to enhance your tan, either spray or light bulb, and it is a clean place with a professional staff. I do recommend it.  Again, is the booth sprayer perfect? NO.. but what you get for $25, it is ALRIGHT.
