Are Xenoestrogens Ruining Your Girlish Figure, Health & Happiness?

When your hormones are perfectly in balance, you feel like you can conquer the world, but when they are off, they can make add volume to your belly, hips and thighs; may cause a number of health problems; and ignite terrible mood swings.

While a number of factors influence the balance of our hormones, women in many developed nations have an additional man-made force playing havoc on our hormones that our great grandmothers didn’t have to contend with–xenoestrogens, compounds that mimic estrogen in our bodies and can alter hormonal activity. They are found in plastics, pesticides and growth hormones given to livestock and poultry, which we consume.

Since men are also inundated with these chemicals, they are also suffering from estrogen dominance when exposed to xenoestrogens, which is thought to contribute to hair loss, atherosclerosis, prostate problems, lowered libido, weight gain and impotency.

Simple steps to minimize your exposure to xenoestrogen, include choosing organic produce whenever possible, especially for the ones sprayed with the most pesticides (click here to see the Environmental Working Group’s list of the top 10 most contaminated fruits and veggies ). Also, buy hormone-free, organic meats and milk, preferably from grass-fed animals. Use glass food containers and stainless steel water bottles instead of plastics. Paint your home with low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paint. Do not microwave your food in plastic containers or covered in plastic wrap. Choose organic, natural body care products and natural cleaning products.

Detoxing the liver will help your body to metabolize xenoestrogens more efficiently. Drink plenty of purified water and eat cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, kale, cauliflower and spinach. In addition to their detoxifying properties, cruciferous vegetables contain an an estrogen-balancing chemical called indole-3-carbinol.

While we live in an imperfect world, it doesn’t mean we have to go through life blindly assaulted by the things we cannot see. Since knowledge is power, the more you know about the things that can hurt you, like xenoestrogens, the more control you can take over your health.

Xenoestrogens are so pervasive in our world, that no one can avoid them. So, how can you detoxify your body and eliminate them as much as possible? Luckily, there are many natural xenoextstrogen detoxifiers to add to our diet or supplements.

Phytoestrogens are probably at the top of the list. Why would you want to put MORE estrogen into your body, you ask? It’s because phytoestrogens, found in plants, bind to the receptors that xenoestrogens bind to and keep them from accumulating in your body.

These weak estrogens, found in beans, leafy green vegetables and oils, are a very good way to detoxify and remove xenoestrogens naturally. Another good detoxifier and cancer preventive is Indole 3-Carbinol found in cruciferous vegetables like kale, cabbage and broccoli.

You can find Indole 3-Carbinol in capsules, but getting it from vegetables also gives you the rest of the plant’s nutrition. It helps your liver remove xenoestrogens and also provides vitamins and minerals that enhance your body’s immune system.

One thing that may NOT be good for reducing xenoestrogens is coffee. Some studies show that caffeine boosts estrogen levels at more than a single cup a day. I Digress- and Have a Real Live Dork Inside of Me~—-Me!

Today I woke up texting with my friend Bob Sliter, who is coming into town from LA to do some retail work for one of his companies, Windsor Fashions, he is some executive checking some things out. It was 5 am, he was at LAX, and I was in bed with my pug, Roxie, who just didn’t want to get up! So she made me want to stay in bed too. When she is against my back when I lay on my right side, she feels like a furry growth. When I lay on my left side, she is against my belly and I feel pregnant. She clings to me like a little spider monkey and therefore makes my body a magnet to my bed!

I also stayed up late, due to drinking an electrolyte drink too late, while sewing, which made it difficult to fall asleep right away. I turned on my DVR to watch the latest Mad Men and I cannot believe Don Draper is marrying Megan! Totally nuts, and Peggy, what is up with Peggy and Don? That show is unbelieveably great.

Then I watched the latest LA Ink, and I keep looking at Ruthless‘ hair cut! And if you click Ruthless’ name, you will see that she got her first tattoo in Bridgeport CT! I had no idea, until I posted this and read about her, CRAZY! I digress, oh and when Kat and Ruthless smile, they have these holes in their cheeks,where they obviously had their dimples pierced at one point, think before you peirce your face! Although, I do love eyebrow piercings with tiny hoops. I think that looks sort of cute.

I was in CVS a couple days ago and saw this Asian girl with a cool a$$ haircut and asked her if I could take a pic because I am thinking, I might need to make my hair cooler. I did cut it shorter, and went Jennifer Anniston golden brown, blonde, but need a little funk. Here is my girl in CVS, who gets her hair cut for $20 by a Chinese guy in Queens.

I am tired today, but hopelessly emphatically excited about my belts! I cannot take it! I love that they come in 3 widths! I love wearing all of the widths, and felt this am that even though I was sporting an old school rugby, navy and orange striped shirt with a long sleeved white tee underneath, I put on my skinny brown zebra belt and just about passed out from the cool that I saw! The three fabrics, my shirt, my black down vest, and my belt! I was thinking, how can someone NOT be a BELT PERSON!? Belts make the world a more interesting place! I think my belt fascination began in the 80s when everyone was wearing the studded, punk rock belts, which are now a classic! For the longest time I have been telling my friends that IF I ever went camping with a guy and took a dip in the lake, and didn’t have access to a blow dryer the guy would run for the hills once my hair “air dried”!! My unblown hair looks like a cross between bozo the clown and Rosanna Dana from SNL, back in the day! I swear to you, I could never let my hair air dry! I woke up at 3 am Saturday and saw this product infomercial for CURL CONFIDENCE! I couldn’t believe it, all the women on there had the same problems I did with my hair, If I didn’t blow dry it it basically looks AWFUL ! I knew I had some curls and waves underneath the frizz but I didn’t know how to make them happen and look decent, or get that effortless beach tousled hair we all want and love!

This is my very first Video Blog.. I didn’t want to over think, over plan, and over prepare… I thought to jump in, do it, get it done, since I told about 6 people I was going to start video blogging.. I HAD TO DO IT… I don’t prefer to be thought of as “hot air.” I am a doer, and that is how I live, breathe and operate. While it isn’t perfect, it was fun, challenging to step outside my comfort zone and go it alone. My friend Sheri has been mentioning Moroccan Oil for ages, with respect to hair products, and raving about it. I think she would get it at Louis Licari in the city before they blow dried her hair. So the other day, while on a mission to completely transform myself from super blonde to warm brown hair, I happened upon Argan Oil at the cash out! I picked it up and it said on the label, Argan Oil, derived from Moroccan Argan Trees. I saw the word Moroccan and immediately put it on the counter with all my hair transformation products.

Before Blowing out my new brown tresses, I put some of this auburn colored oil in my hands and distributed evenly through my damp hair. It has an interesting smell.. not awful.. but the Moroccan Oil used after my haircut at Blaine Rice Salon smelled AMAZING… and I am sure it was much more expensive. I was already dropping a hundy on my cut, so I forewent the OIL… My end story is that I love the way it makes my hair feel, soft, manageable, less coarse, and shiny! SO GET YOURSELF SOME! It works.. I read it is good for the skin as well… but there are skin products derived specifically for that purpose… although, our hair and skin are sort of the same, I bet you could rub this into your skin and be fine…

This Argan Oil works well… but I am not sure I would use it on super light blonde hair due to the color of it.

I can’t get the song out of my head sometimes from this commercial where the girl has super long shiny hair and Garnier is touting their product SLEEK AND SHINE, which is supposed to keep your hair frizz free on a humid day- EVEN 97% humidity! After seeing the commercial a million times, and being a product snob and only buying upscale brands to tame frizz.. I finally decided to break down and buy it while in CVS the other day… In the NY area we have had so much rain… ridiculous amounts, so I thought this a prudent purchase. However, I only bought the conditioner, mistakingly bought two conditioners as I was daydreaming, as usual….

The conditioner WORKS! I will now get the shampoo on my weekly jaunt to my neighborhood CVS and let you all know if when combining the shampoo and conditioner calls for double duty, mack daddy NO FRIZZ! Let’s all hope!
